Description:

Spanish travelling chest with corners and slightly domed lid framed in iron, the lid and body with iron fastenings hammered into rosettes, with six carrying handles (one at each end, two behind and two in front); covered in cream gesso and painted with escutcheons in poly-lobed reserves.
Early 16th century.
45cm x 118 x52cm.
This object can certainly be dated to around 1500 (contrary to the date of the original). Unlike de Ricqles, who catalogued it as 14th/15th century. However, Seager sees similarities between this and a late 14th-century Florentine cassone in the V&A collection, decorated with figures of knights and ladies, the ironwork and shape of the lid being very similar.
